Weather at the beach is famously unpredictable. With no trees to provide shade or block the wind, you're at the mercy of the elements. The water can be crystal clear or teeming with seaweed, calm as a lake or wild with waves. The sky might be brilliantly sunny, hazy with intense fog, or painted with vibrant colors. We've learned to adapt to any situation—embracing the unpredictability is key. After all, you can't control Mother Nature, so the best approach is to go with the flow.
Read below to find out how we handle sessions when excessive wind is present.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
Running a photography business for many years has taught us quite a few tricks to manage hair and dresses during windy beach sessions. While we won't delve into all of them here, as each situation varies, we often utilize both session-specific techniques and strategically chosen wooded areas to block the wind.
On session days, we closely monitor several weather apps, cross-referencing their predictions. My strategy is to compare multiple apps and trust my gut feeling based on earlier weather patterns. We aim to make rescheduling decisions as early as possible, ideally before everyone has started getting ready, to avoid any last-minute changes.
When evaluating wind conditions, we pay attention to both sustained winds and gusts. If the wind speed exceeds 14 mph, it's usually a safe bet that we'll need to reschedule or choose an inland or sheltered location.

It was especially windy on this day so we walked over to where the trees could block the wind.
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

My little friend here chose to pull the top portion of her hair into a bow.
Hairspray is, of course, a top essential—not just for women, but for men and children too. Don't worry if it feels stiff; the camera won't pick up on that.
Your hairstyle choice is also important. On super windy days, long loose hair simply won't work. It's not always necessary to pull all your hair back; sometimes, a headband or just securing the top layer can do the trick. If you're a Pinterest user, you can search for "windy day hairstyles" and find plenty of inspiration. I've collected a few you can check out [HERE].
Bringing along bobby pins, hair ties, and headbands for emergencies is a good idea. Clothing choices matter too. For children, use double-sided tape to keep collars from flapping. Women can use belts to secure dresses and wear shorts or a swimsuit underneath in case it goes all Marilyn Monroe on you!

Do you want to know how to make God laugh?
