Having creativity, vision, and an 'eye' is a great start to learning photography, but it is only the beginning. What makes a photograph stand out involves more components than one might think. We all know that exposure and focus are the first things to learn, but to create a good picture, you also need to consider composition, lighting, storytelling, color balance, posing, framing, patterns, leading lines, depth, negative space, planning for cropping, aperture, the foreground, middle ground, and background, hues, color grading, and more.
I began early with constant drawing, taking lessons at age 9 and continuing until I graduated from the University of South Alabama with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and graphic design. After that, I began teaching art and commissioning pencil portraits. I have taught middle school art in both public and private schools, taught home classes, and mentored photographers. |
When I opened my photography business in 2010, I knew I needed to step out of my introverted comfort zone to run a successful business. I immersed myself in learning about marketing and client communication, and it paid off. I built this website through countless hours of research, obtained my SEO certification, and applied what I learned in graphic design during college. As a result, this website has ranked on the first page of Google for Santa Rosa Beach photographers since the first year.
By 2017, the business had grown too large for me to manage alone, so I partnered with Caitie Beth Nelson. Together, our business now generates over six figures annually. I am constantly researching and learning new facets of portrait photography, and I’d love to share all I’ve learned with you!
