Helpful Tips for staying in South Walton

5/14/2020

Located along a 26-mile stretch of white sandy beaches in Northwest Florida, South Walton encompasses 16 distinct beach neighborhoods, each with its own visual style, amenities and charm. South Walton is home to four state parks, one state forest, and more than 200 miles of hiking and biking trails. Renowned for natural scenic beauty, turquoise waters and sugar sand beaches, South Walton was named one of the “Secret Florida Beaches” by Travel + Leisure, but is easily accessible as a drive to destination or by flying to nearby airports Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) or the Destin – Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS). An upscale, yet casual place to unwind, South Walton is the place to recharge and build lasting memories. Learn more at VisitSouthWalton.com

  • It can get confusing to understand our city-but-not-really-city names that make up the Florida Panhandle. We have little communities that like to be known as cities. The actual cities with zip codes are, from left to right, Ft. Walton, Okaloosa Island, Destin, Miramar Beach (Sandestin, TOPS'L), Santa Rosa Beach (Dune Allen to Seacrest Beach), Panama City Beach (Rosemary Beach, Inlet Beach), then Panama City.

  • Flag system. HERE is a link to the current flag postings in the panhandle.  Pay attention to the flags, you may not be able to see the danger but trust the officials do. If there is a double red flag they will fine you if you are deeper than knee deep.

  • Chairs and umbrellas. Locals have a love/hate relationship with beach chairs. Here are the (current) rules for the services. Only rented chairs are to be erected, they are not allowed to 'save a spot' and hope someone comes along to rent them.  How close you sit to them is up to social standards and the attendant. Some don't care if you use the shade, others do. They cannot make you move if you are not in the chair itself. If you would like to rent one look for the attendant, there is supposed to be an attendant nearby at all times unless it is privately rented.

  • Private beaches. You may see signs saying 'stay off private beach'. This law is constantly changing, currently it states that you may 'traverse only' , ie walk, along the waterline however you are not allowed to sit or lounge.

  • We love our turtles and take them seriously.  South Walton is home to several species of sea turtles, including the Loggerhead, Kemps Ridley, Leatherback and Green sea turtle, which visit South Walton beaches each year during nesting season, from May 1 through October 31. To ensure their survival we need the beaches to be CLEAN, DARK and FLAT.

  • Stay off the Dunes. Like our turtles, we are serious about our dunes. The dunes protect our city during storms. They plant particular greenery so the roots help keep the sand from shifting and helps the slowly eradicating local wildlife.
Before we begin, here is one thing you MUST know about rainy day activities.
When it rains here everyone comes off the beaches and start looking for something else to do. This means TRAFFIC, especially around shopping areas such as the Sandestin Outlets. If you would like to go somewhere watch the weather and plan early. I would suggest looking for things in walking distance or see if your condo offers activities.

  • Who doesn't love a bonfire! We recommend Cap't Zac's Bonfires  for bonfires and chair rentals.
  • Fishing Charters. Our own Caitie's husband runs a family friendly fishing charter for calm waters, check it out, it's a blast! Nelsons Guide Company
  • South Walton is home to more than 200 miles of hiking and biking trails with varied levels of difficulty. Some trails are paved and others all natural, so whether you’re looking for a leisurely bike ride or stroll or a heart-pounding, sweat-inducing adventure, there’s a trail for you in South Walton. You can read more about all the trails HERE.

  • Our Coastal Dune Lakes are a very rare natural phenomenon, defined as a freshwater lake that periodically breaks through the coastal dunes to mix with saltwater. Fifteen fresh and saltwater coastal dune lakes are found throughout South Walton. These geological gems can be found in very few places worldwide. South Walton has the largest concentration of coastal dune lakes in the world.
  • Divers can see the Underwater Art Museum located in Grayton Beach.
  • The museum, which came to life through a partnership between the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA), the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) and Visit South Walton, combines art, education and ecosystems – three passions of the South Walton community – in a truly unique way, creating a source of biological replenishment and protective marine habitats where one does not exist.
Divers who wish to visit the site can take a dive boat .7 miles off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park. The coordinates for the center sculpture (SWARA Skull) are Latitude N30 18 45.262 Longitude W086 09 33.722.
Want to book an excursion? Let the team at Dive 30A help you explore this unique sculpture park. Their shop is located in the heart of Grayton Beach, which means you are just a short jaunt from the beach. CLICK HERE to book your trip.
Although only service dogs and dogs with proper permits (which require their owners to be Walton County residents or property owners) are allowed on Walton County’s public beaches, and only then while leashed and during certain hours (no dogs are allowed on the beach between the daylight hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during Daylight savings time), there are still plenty of dog-friendly options for visiting dogs that don’t require beach permits. Please see below for suggested dog-friendly activities and accommodations for visitors.

Socializing
Let your dog run wild at the South Walton Dog Park, located at 342 J.D. Miller Road in Santa Rosa Beach or in Destin at Nancy Weidenhamer Dog Park 4100 Indian Bayou Trail, Destin, FL 32541. This is a great place for dogs to run, play and enjoy some fun in the Florida sun year-round. Divided into different sections for large, small and senior dogs, this amenity provides the perfect playtime environment for your pooch.

Eco-adventures
If you want to get some fresh air and exercise with your furry friend, look no further than South Walton’s more than 200 miles of trails in our four state parks and the Point Washington State Forest, all of which are perfect for walking your dog on a leash.

  • Point Washington State Forest offers 3.5-, 5- and 10-mile loops located ½ mile south of 98 on Highway 395.
  • At Eden Gardens State Park, you will find local history and nature intertwined with the historic Wesley house.
  • At nearly 2,000 acres, Grayton Beach State Park offers a variety of activities like paddleboarding, trails and options for overnight stay.
  • Sharing its name with the coastal dune lake inside of its boundaries, Deer Lake State Park has 11 natural communities in the park for visitors to enjoy.
  • Topsail Hill Preserve State Park offers dunes more than 25 feet tall and three rare coastal dune lakes. One of the most popular activities at the park is Geo-seeking, an outdoor game using GPS devices to find and hide treasures.
  • One of the most widely used paved paths in South Walton is the Timpoochee Trail. The 19-mile-long multi-use path winds through 12 beach communities along Scenic Highway 30A, through recreational areas, state parks, the state forest and costal dune lakes.

As a reminder, be sure to bring water for both you and your pooch, as well as dog bags to pick up after them while visiting the parks.

Shopping
While you’re out shopping the local boutiques of South Walton’s 16 beach neighborhoods, don’t forget to pick up something special for your four-legged companions.
