Caitie Beth NelsonDestin + 30A Family and Senior Portrait Photographer “A mini or a full session — which is best for us?” This is one of the most frequently asked questions that Amy and I receive in our inquiries from folks vacationing in the Destin and 30A areas. It's a good question with a simple answer. We just need to take a few things into consideration!

Caitie Beth NelsonDestin + 30A Family and Senior Portrait Photographer A photography session with kids can be a good time, but oftentimes, they're little stinkers who can sense when we are anxious. That's when all cooperation flies out the window. If you're on vacation it can be especially difficult! Traveling is rough, being in a new place can be overwhelming, sand can feel icky on their toes, and sometimes the bedtime and nap time routine is all out of whack. We really can't expect them to be their best, but we can be encouraging and have a good time along the way!
Here’s what we tell our Destin and 30A clients: 1. Tell them you're meeting your friend. We've exchanged emails and we've probably had a phone call or two. That's good enough to be considered friends, right? I'm just the friend from Florida who loves the beach and taking pictures. Let's all just hang out and have fun! (I can't take the credit for this advice, though. I once photographed a married couple who were both psychologists and they told this to their toddler sons. Those boys warmed up to me immediately!) Caitie Beth NelsonDestin & 30A Family + Senior Portrait Photographer Did you vacation along Florida’s 30a for your 1st birthday celebration? I didn’t, either. Bummer, right? But, this little cutie got to do it! (Awesome idea, mom and dad!)
Of course, a celebration with a beach portrait session was in order. Beach photographer? Check! Cute outfit? Check! Kid size beach chair? Check! Balloon? Check! Cute baby? CHECK! We met at Grayton Beach State Park, beside Watercolor. This is one of our favorite locations. Grandma and Grandpa were there, too. It was an adorable family ordeal. It was such a bright evening! So many of our first portraits together had a lovely and warm glow. As the sun began to set and the light became more soft, we set up the cake smash scene. A cake smash…at the beach?! It sounds extra messy, doesn’t it? It was extra cute, and extra beautiful. This boy is loved so, so much. And it really shows. Caitie Beth Nelson Destin + 30A Family + Senior Portrait Photographer We began planning our session together months in advance. This was no last minute event for Sharon, and email conversations with me would not do. This had to be perfect. Her adult sons and families were flying in to Santa Rosa Beach for their family reunion vacation. No one in this group was from Florida, and to all be here at the beach together was something special. We talked all about it together on the phone, which honestly, is my preferred method of conversation. A lot of our clients drive or fly into the 30A and Destin areas from out of state. Choosing a photographer without an initial in-person consultation, or even a referral from a friend, can feel risky. For Sharon, it was a big risk. The family had gathered together a couple of years before for a beach vacation and hired a photographer for formal portraits on the beach. Her experience with the photographer during the session was uncomfortable, and the images she received were such a low quality that they could not be used as prints. It was a waste of their time, and disappointing, to say the least. I was glad to hear about her experience and assure her that our time together would be different. My product would be exceptional. |
