FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where are you located?
  • We are located along Florida's Gulf Coast and travel to the following areas: Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island, Destin, Miramar Beach, Santa Rosa Beach (including the 30A communities of Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, and Inlet Beach), and Panama City Beach.
  • There are many beautiful options for portrait sessions in the Florida Panhandle. While the beach is the most popular choice, we also love photographing in parks, coastal towns, and scenic local areas. We’re happy to recommend favorite locations we know well, or we can come to your preferred location, provided parking is available. We’ll talk through your goals for the session and help choose a location that best reflects your style, personality, and group size. You can explore local options in our Location Gallery to get a feel for the different areas.
Are there any location restrictions or permits?
Are there location restrictions or permits? Some communities have specific rules for professional photography:
• Alys Beach, Seaside, WaterColor, Rosemary Beach, and Watersound require that you are a homeowner or a registered guest staying on the property at the time of the session.
• Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach also require a day photography permit, which must be applied for in advance.
We’re happy to help you navigate these requirements when selecting your location.
Do you travel outside these areas?
Yes — we are willing to travel. Additional travel fees may apply depending on the distance.  Just let us know where you’re staying, and we’ll talk through the options.
What time will we meet?
All beach sessions will be held just before sunset. You can get an idea of the time by checking the sunset times in Florida.
What is included in the session fee?
You will find all session pricing on the Session Choice page within the website.
  • Pre-session consultation. We will plan ahead to ensure we make the most of your time.
  • Shooting time on location. Time spent shooting depends on the session choice.
  • Use of props
  • Hand edited high resolution images for download along with education on the best way to print.
  • Online gallery for viewing, downloading, and purchasing. While digital images do come with the session we do offer quality prints, canvas, albums and products for sale.
How many people can be included in my session?
As many as we can comfortably photograph within the time and structure of the session you choose. Each session type has a recommended group size as a guideline, but we’re always happy to discuss alternate options based on your goals.
For example, a Classic Session could include a large group, but time would likely allow for a strong full-group portrait rather than individual family breakdowns. On the other hand, a Group Session might include fewer people if you’re looking to photograph multiple locations, senior portraits, family portraits, or two small families with young children.
What matters most is how you want to use the time, not just the number of people. We’ll help you choose the session that best fits what you’re hoping to capture so nothing feels rushed or limited.
If you’re unsure which option is right, just give us a call — we’re happy to walk through it with you.
Can our pets be part of the session?
Absolutely! I only ask that you let me know when planning the session. Please be aware however that animals are not allowed on the beach itself without a pet permit, which you can only receive if you own property in the county.
HERE is some more information on bringing your fur baby and HERE is a gallery of examples of past pet clients.
Do you offer image retouching or creative edits?
Yes — and our thoughtful, detailed editing is one of the things that truly sets us apart.

First and foremost, we are photographers, not digital illustrators. Our goal is to document this season of your life honestly and beautifully, while refining each image so distractions don’t pull focus from the people and moments that matter.

Standard editing includes:

• Removal of distractions
• Smoothing clothing wrinkles
• Tidying hair flyaways
• Evening skin tone
• Removing temporary marks that won’t be there in a few weeks (such as blemishes, bruises, or scabs)
We intentionally leave permanent features such as tattoos, scars, and birthmarks unless you specifically request otherwise.

A note about creative and extensive edits
I (Amy) have a background in digital art and hold a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Art, along with additional training and certifications in digital creation. That said, our family photography model is designed to deliver a full, cohesive gallery in a timely manner — not just a handful of heavily stylized images with long turnaround times.
While I truly enjoy spending hours perfecting a single portrait, that level of artistic indulgence isn’t realistic within a standard family session workflow. Most clients prefer a wide selection of beautifully edited images rather than a few magazine-style edits delivered months later.

Add-on retouching & creative edits
• Up to three standard retouching requests are included at no charge
• Additional special-request retouching is available for $10–$50 per image, depending on complexity
• Digital creations (advanced artistic edits) average $50 per image
– These must be planned in advance, so please let us know before your session if you’re interested
• Heirloom Painted Portraits are available on select images from your session for $50 per image
– Not every portrait is a candidate for this service
– Please contact us in advance if you’d like to explore this option
What if it rains on the day of our shoot?
Unfortunately, there is not much we can do. Our best advice we have found is to schedule early in the vacation so we have a little wiggle room should we need to reschedule. We have moved a session inside the clients home upon request and can reserve a conference room at a nearby hotel for an impromptu studio. You can read more about our weather policy on this blog post.
What happens if the photographer gets sick or unable to shoot on the scheduled day?
In the rare event that we cannot personally attend your session, we will do everything possible to ensure it doesn’t disrupt your plans. Here's our process:
First, we check with each other—if Amy is unavailable, Caitie will step in.
If neither of us can make it, we contact our trusted assistant photographers to handle the session while Amy still completes the editing.
If our assistants are also unavailable, we’ll give you the choice to reschedule or help you find another photographer.
Rest assured, we will never leave you in a bind or say, “Oops, sorry, you’re on your own.” Your session is our priority, and we are committed to making sure you feel supported every step of the way.
What makes you qualified to shoot our session?
Fair question—after all, you’re trusting us to capture your treasured memories.
Amy Newsom Susi
Amy is a shooter and primary editor for Amy and Caitie. Her passion for the arts began at the age of 9, earning recognition in 14 out of 16 drawing competitions with many published in books and magazines. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and graphic design. With her strong foundation in composition, color theory, and the art of working with light, expanding her expertise to include storytelling, advanced camera techniques, and mastery of digital image enhancement was a natural and exciting progression.
Alongside her photography career, Amy has pursued her second love—working with children. She has 10 years of experience teaching preschool, taught 7th grade Art, and provided private art lessons. Amy has also worked with ESE (special education) students, both in self-contained classrooms and through pull-out services, and has completed training as a Registered Behavior Technician. A mother of five—three in college and two still at home—Amy’s specialties include capturing large groups, children, and senior portraits with ease and creativity.
Caitie Beth Nelson
Caitie is not only a talented photographer but also the glue that keeps Amy and Caitie Photography running smoothly. She handles communication, keeps Amy grounded when her ADD takes flight, and brings her 13 years of photography experience to the team. Caitie has a remarkable talent for posing couples and excels in capturing the magic of weddings, making her an invaluable part of the team both behind the lens and behind the scenes.
Like Amy, Caitie has experience in the education field and is also a proud mom to four adorable children. Her patience, organizational skills, and eye for detail make her an indispensable part of the team.
What type of payments do you take?
We prefer cash payments as the card service (Square and Venmo) charge a fee to use however we do accept debit, credit cards and checks.
Are we required to purchase prints after the session? Is there a minimum purchase amount?
No, and no. We offer a range of premium products, including prints, framed prints, canvases, and albums, because we believe your professional portraits deserve nothing but the best. Why invest in high-quality photography only to settle for a $15 print from a kiosk that doesn’t do your images justice?
We’ve carefully vetted several printing companies and partnered with the best to ensure superior quality. Our monitors are professionally calibrated to match the printers, guaranteeing that the colors of your prints remain true and vibrant.
Additionally, when you purchase a print, Amy will further refine the image to ensure it looks perfect at your chosen size. This level of attention to detail ensures your memories are preserved beautifully and professionally.

Can I order prints or products later?
After your session, the RAW images are immediately backed up to three separate hard drives to ensure their safety. Once your images are carefully edited, they will be uploaded to a private online gallery, where you can download, share, and purchase prints. This gallery will remain active for two weeks.
To make room for new clients, the RAW files will be deleted after editing, and the edited images will be removed from two of the three hard drives. This means your images will only remain on one hard drive, so their long-term availability cannot be guaranteed. We recommend purchasing at the time of the session. If you are unsure of what you need just yet you can let me know and I will back up the images as well.
